The Krar, An Ancient & Modern Day Spiritual Heritage

The krar, a mystical instrument with its bowl-shaped form and five or six strings, originates from the depths of East Africa, carrying within it a rich spiritual heritage. It is an integral part of our culture, intricately interwoven with the profound spiritual practices of King David, a revered master of the krar. Its ancient history traces back to Tigray, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, existing since the distant era of 2000 BC, before it transformed into the harp. Today, the Azmari and Wata, poet-musicians, hold the honor of playing this revered stringed instrument, using its melodic strains to accompany modern day songs, expressions of love, and soul-stirring poetry, enveloping our souls in a captivating embrace.

Beloved for centuries, the krar has bestowed joy and entertainment upon our people, becoming a balm for weary hearts. Its enchanting melodies even soothed the troubled spirit of Saul during the Chu'kai days, as David's skilled hands plucked its strings, bringing relief and healing. The krar, adorned with wood, cloth, and beads, serves as a conduit between the physical and spiritual realms, resonating with the depths of our souls, connecting us with the divine. Yet, throughout the ages, there have been unfounded falsehoods surrounding this sacred instrument, propagated by those who failed to understand its true essence. They twisted its purpose, falsely claiming that it aroused base desires and glorified earthly passions, detached from our present reality. However, in the realm of contemporary music, we witness traces of that distorted glorification of carnal love, a distortion that strays from the authentic spiritual path.

We express our gratitude to ያሁአ for gifting us with the wisdom to create an instrument that has endured across countless generations. Our traditions of dance and celebration have influenced diverse cultures, who have embraced the same rhythmic pulse, the 1-2 beat style that has remained alive within us for centuries. In the 2000 film "Bible Collection: Esther," even Caucasian actors showcased their jubilation through this familiar beat, reminiscent of the krar's timeless rhythm, a testament to its enduring spirit.

Today, the krar stands as one of East Africa's most beloved stringed instruments, serving as a conduit for our connection with ያሁአ. It becomes a vessel for exploring our own sense of purpose and meaning, forging bonds of harmony among our kin. Its profound impact transcends the emotional and psychological realms, anchoring our culture firmly amidst the storms of adversity and conflict. Through the krar, we find solace, unity, and a divine communion that echoes through our collective spirit.
